Place: Lectures: University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio Campus (map pdf), seminar room S25, the 2nd floor in Snellmania building
Credits:1 ECT
Language:English
Organizers:Organized jointly by The Doctoral Programme in Environmental Health and Environmental Risk Assessment Centre (ERACedu)
Course leader: Prof. Jukka Juutilainen

This course is intended to present different types of omics- methods and their possibilities as well as restrictions in research aiming at assessment of environmental health risks. The course is open to all students and researchers interested in the topic. No previous knowledge on the course topics is necessary.

Practical work

In addition to attending to lectures writing of an essay on the topic is required for getting 1 credit point.

Topics: Methods and possibilities of functional genomics, metabolomics, introduction to bioinformatics and transcriptomics, methods and possibilities of proteomics, applications of the omics-methods in environmental health risk assessment.

The aims of the course

  • to provide students a general overview of the different omics methods
  • to critically evaluate the usability and explain strengths and weaknesses of those methods when used in assessment of environmental health risks.
