Canthia (the building number 1 on the map)

Teknia (the building number 13 on the map)

Credits: 2.0 credit points

Language: English

Organizers: The course is organized jointly by the Graduate school in Environmental Health and Environmental Risk Assessment Centre (ERAC)

Course leader: Professor Keith Baverstock, Dept. of Environmental Sciences, University of Kuopio

Course description: This course will look at new developments in biology (instability in genome, bystander effect, non-targeted effects i.e "epigenetic phenomena") primarily as they apply to environmental toxicology as a whole. Their origins in the study of the effects of ionising radiation will be discussed in detailed.

It is important to understand how environmental agents, radiation, chemicals, particles etc. are capable of causing both modification of the genomic sequence (mutation) and its epigenetic modification in ways that adversely affect healthy phenotype.

The course of 1 week will consist of a series of lectures and tutorials.

Lecturers: Professor Keith Baverstock (KB) University of Kuopio Dept. of Environmental Sciences, Kuopio

Dr Oleg Belyakov (OB) Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Helsinki
