Credits: 1.0 credit points

Language: English

Organizers: The course is organized jointly by Academy of Finland, ESGEMO programme and Environmental Risk Assessment Centre (ERAC)

Course leader: Dr. Jarmo Holopainen, University of Kuopio, Finland

Course description: The amount of data obtained from biogenic VOCanalysis (and other fields of biology) is steadily increasing, mainly due to increased resolution of instruments and more active use of secondary metabolite analysis in biological experiments. The use of standard statistical tools such as ANOVA and MANOVA come to short upon extracting information that is stored in large amount of data. Multivariate data analysis is a technique than can work as an additional tool to the traditional methods of analysis, making the user capable of handling large amounts of data. This oneday course with tutorials will focus on a technique called Principal Component Analysis (PCA), especially useful in the exploration of data. The results from a PCA can further be used in the traditional methods of ANOVA and MANOVA without the problems of covariance in the system (this is removed by performing PCA). The course will be a mixture of lectures and computerexercises using a chemometric software. Tutorial sessions will include advice and personal discussions with the teachers. Participant numbers are limited to 16. ECTS credits: 1.0. There is no course fee. Travel and meals of participants are not supported. Deadline for registration is October 20, 2006.

Lecturers: Dr. Ă…smund Rinnan, Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Denmark
